End of 2009 message from the Chair of Governors.

As we approach Christmas, two terms of the academic year are almost over and so I thought it might be helpful to tell you what Governors have been doing recently and plan to do in the future.
Excellent Results:

We monitor very closely the standards reached by all the children and for 2008/09 they were excellent. We would like to thank all the staff for their hard work and commitment in achieving this outcome whilst they also make sure that learning and achieving are enjoyable. The School has a much wider curriculum than just these attainments and this was reported on in the last Ofsted Report and further evidenced by the Artsmark and Sports Awards. Well done everyone!

Strategic Development Plan:
Throughout the Spring and Summer, Governors met with the Senior Leadership Team and developed a Strategic Development Plan for the next three years up to 2012 (a full copy is available from the school). We identified four key areas for action:

  • The Curriculum (following the changes brought about nationally by the Rose Report);

  • Pupil Voice, Experience and Opportunity;

  • Community (including Equalities and Community Cohesion)

  • Leadership focussing on Strategy, Financial Planning and Succession Planning.

  • This Plan will be regularly monitored and reviewed with any necessary adaptations made throughout the next few years.

Future Challenges:
Although the school tries to have as wide a curriculum and agenda as possible, as Governors we also have to ensure we comply with national priorities. There are two which Ofsted will specifically wish to inspect:
Safeguarding Children which Governors fully support and have completed an audit of our practices and processes in order to improve wherever possible. An action plan is being drawn up to ensure that all classrooms and the whole school provides safe areas for children, staffing recruitment, selection and ongoing training fully complies and the overall physical security aspects of the school will be looked at again;

  • Community Cohesion is the second key national priority and you will have seen the various experiences and initiatives being undertaken by the school in recent Newsletters.

  • The Church Inspection (following Ofsted) found that church/school distinctiveness was satisfactory and we intend to improve on that with our new co-opted Governor for Christ Church, Rev. Paul Peterson, who takes up post in February next year.

Governors wish to work more closely in the future with children’s representative groups such as the School Council and the Eco-Team. We agree it is important to hear their feedback, their plans and to support their initiatives.

Finally we need to help steer the school through the difficult financial times that are ahead as the next Government rolls out its economies which are bound to impact on our budgets. We will always seek to maintain the standards we have achieved and the overall balance of the curriculum to support children in developing as confident and caring future members of our communities.

On behalf of all the School Governors,

Have a peaceful family Christmas and enjoy the break before 2010 begins and we have a new year ahead to use the talents, gifts and this world’s wonderful resources we have been given to enjoy and use wisely.
